Ebook About Montessori at Home or School: How to Teach Grace and Courtesy is a bit like "Montessori meets Miss Manners." In Montessori, grace and courtesy is seen as an important part of a child’s education and an important part of meeting a child’s inner needs. The Montessori method provides a framework that can effectively be used with one child or a group of children. Part I talks about grace and courtesy for preschoolers and elementary-age children. Suggestions are given to help parents and teachers feel comfortable teaching grace and courtesy. Part II gives rules of etiquette in many situations for preschoolers through age 12.Sections include "Using the Montessori Method to Teach Grace and Courtesy," "Why Use the Montessori Method?" "The Preschool Child," "The Elementary-Age Child," "Introductions," "Greetings and Farewells," "Conversations," "Saying 'Please,' 'Thank You,' and 'You're Welcome,'" "Saying 'Excuse Me' and ‘I'm Sorry,'" "Coping with Problems in Public," "Bathroom Manners," "Cleaning up after Yourself," "Having Friends Visit," “Being a Guest at Someone's House," "Table Manners," "Telephone Manners," "Letter Writing," "Games and Sports," and "Showing Respect."Book Montessori at Home or School: How to Teach Grace and Courtesy Review :
It is a good book, and it has helped many. However, I hoped to have many examples/methods on teaching and reminding children to use grace and courtesy. Much of the "How to" part of the book simply speaks of the Montessori philosophy, and not so much applying it to this topic. Her "Research" part of the book spoke of her experience teaching in a classroom, but was more statistical and less practically applicable. More than half the book is etiquette, which is wonderful if I had more examples on how to teach them. 3 out of 5 stars. I had really, really hoped to give this book 5. My favorite quote in the book:"Dr. Montessori realized a young child has a deep sense of personal dignity. We can crush that sense by reprimanding . . . without teaching a child first. The sense can be protected and enhanced through exercises of grace and courtesy."Ages 2 and 1/2 through 6 are the perfect time to emphasize the teaching of grace and courtesy. The author says, "During those years the child has a special receptivity to the learning of manners." The child will enjoy learning about manners, as well. This book is an excellent resource for parents and teachers to read, and later have on hand to use prior to different social events. What to do when meeting people, gift exchanges, formal dinners, casual dinners, having overnight visitors, and everything a child experiences is covered. Everyone is more comfortable knowing these manners! Even adults!I really like the elementary section can be read by the students themselves, as it is written to them. Those parts can also be read by adults, so the wording is right there to use with children.
